Welder working on a piece of metal in a factory

The main research objective of the project is to gain knowledge about the influence of the thermal history of materials produced by Direct Energy Deposition (DED) methods, such as LENS® and WAAM, on their microstructure and properties. The acquired knowledge will enable the development of general guidelines for the design and selection of manufacturing parameters so that materials exhibit the desired mechanical properties resulting solely from in situ heat treatment occurring during the manufacturing process. If the appropriate in situ heat treatment through parameter selection proves to be impossible, a suitable post-process heat treatment of the manufactured components will be designed.

The research will also include verification of the capability to model the thermal history and to extrapolate the obtained results to other process parameters and geometries. For this purpose, numerical modelling of DED processes will be performed using advanced simulation software.

The research is being conducted as part of the OPUS project no. UMO 2022/47/I/ST5/00697 of the National Science Centre.
